S.A. Gerber

Inside-Out

Inside-out of any-
thing close to
hometown reality.
Cars fly by
on the left, and the
desert speeds a blurry
montage on the right.
Skies over the
mountains turn a
promising shade
of grey,
as the sun beams
at lower altitudes.
Sucking the only
precipitation around
from a store-bought
plastic bottle.
April 3rd is the day
Mr. Vidal used as
the end of the world
in Kalki.
This is it.
Think again, Gore.
Other travelers seem
lost…searching.
Inside…outside…
beginning…end.
Sometimes it seems,
all for naught.

Summit
Running up
a mountain,
fading out fast.
Feel like the
last of a kind.
Memories come
like hot waves.
Hearing the far
off chimes of a
ice cream wagon.
The rattle
of tin cans
tied to a
cars bumper.
Seeing the faces
of children
long dead.
Their mothers
long since
have stopped
weeping.
Feeling the
chill of a
California morning,
delivering papers, no-
body reads.
Understanding that
for most,
life will get
progressively worse.
Can read it.
It is written.
Crouching on
the summit now…
definitely the last
of a kind.

The Blue Car (For W.C.W.)
While
A pretty blue
Car
Dependable once long
Ago
Color rusting with
Age
Matches the asphalt
Street…
and the clouds
Above.
